We are seeking a skilled candidate for a PhD position at Valmet Technologies Oy within the framework of SUPUVIR (SUPercontinuum broadband light sources covering UV to IR applications), a new European Training Network involving ten different partners in 5 different EU countries (Denmark, UK, Austria, Poland, France, and Finland) funded by the European H2020 programme. SUPUVIR focuses on supercontinuum sources, laser sources emitting coherent laser light that is broadband enough to be considered “white”. The research and development in SUPUVIR will produce supercontinuum sources enabling new science and applications for optical imaging, spectroscopy, sensing and quality control.
The PhD position opened at Valmet Technologies Oy will focus on the development of “Supercontinuum-based short range LIDAR for industrial applications” and will be performed in close collaboration with the Tampere University of Technology.
The period of employment is 3 years. The salary will be set in accordance with MSCA ESR rates. The monthly salary is subject to country coefficient rate, in Finland the salary being ca. 2300-2600 EUR per month after personal taxes (depending on the ESR’s personal situation).
|Requirements:||The candidate should have a background in Physics, hold an MSc degree or equivalent, and have strong interest in nonlinear optics, fibre optics and waveguides, and laser physics in general, and pursue toward a PhD degree. The project is a European Training Network, funded by the Marie Skłodowska Curie Action, under the Innovative Training Network scheme H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016, such that the candidate should conform to the mobility rules. The candidate can be of any nationality, and he/she is required to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. The location of the candidate's residence or main activity during the 3 years prior to the recruitment is determining. At the time of the recruitment, the candidate must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.|

The successful candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student in Tampere University of Technology. Furthermore, through the international training network, the PhD students will have the opportunity to spend some time at other European partners’ premises and gain knowledge on silica and soft-glass chemistry, preform design and fibre drawing, linear and nonlinear fibre and waveguide characterization, nonlinear fibre optics, and in-depth knowledge of a broad range of the main applications of supercontinuum high-power broadband light sources.|
