Postdoctoral Researcher/Doctoral Student (Cloud Software Engineering), 1-2 positions

Pursuing excellence, The Faculty of Computing and Electrical Engineering is an international, diverse and multidisciplinary community of researchers and students. The topical research covers the essential ingredients of building the future digital society with solutions that are groundbreaking and designed understanding the human needs. The outcome of the basic research in software design and systems, signal processing, communications engineering and networking, computer science, electrical engineering, and power engineering finds its applications in many forefronts of society, ICT, industrial intelligent machines, healthcare, consumer solutions and so forth. The position will be placed in the Laboratory of Pervasive Computing, which is a fostering multinational academic unit with strong research and education competence in the areas of computer and software engineering and networking. A notable part of education in MSc level is given in English. A distinctive feature of the laboratory is that it has wide-spread impact on the community through industrial and research cooperation.

Job description:

Depending on the background of the selected candidate(s), the position can be either Postdoctoral Researcher or Doctoral Student.

Postdoctoral Researcher:

  • TUT is seeking to fill one postdoctoral fellowship position with promising researchers who are in the beginning of their career. The aim is to support highly qualified postdoctoral researchers who are outstanding in their field and thereby strengthen the scientific profile of TUT.

  • The selected person is expected to work in different aspects of cloud software engineering, including software architectures, best practices, code and architectural smells and mining software repository.

  • The research tasks will be related to the Software Engineering domain, specifically on cloud-native software architectures, architectural smells, and mining software repositories. The research work will be conducted in the Software Engineering group under the supervision of Dr. Davide Taibi.

Doctoral Student:

  • We are currently looking for a motivated and proactive MSc graduate to join our research team dealing with Cloud Software Engineering.

Postdoctoral Researcher:

The call for two years is open to Postdoctoral Researchers who holds an applicable doctoral degree (the dissertation must be submitted and proof must be available by 1 May 2018.) We are particularly interested in candidates with significant international research experience during recent years. The applicant should be able to plan and conduct research work independently. We seek applicants with a strong background in some of the following fields:

  • Mining Software Repository

  • Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning applied to software engineering

  • Microservices software development

  • Software Quality and Maintenance

Doctoral Student:

The call for a two-year position is open to applicants who fulfil the following criteria:

  • Candidates have a MSc degree in computer science or statistics

  • Candidates have knowledge of mining software repositories, artificial intelligence applied in software engineering and software programming skills

  • Candidates have good analytical skills

  • Candidates have a willingness to learn new things and to work in a multi-cultural environment in Tampere, Finland

The successful Doctoral Sutdent Candidate must have demonstrated (during studies towards the higher university degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies. A research plan for a doctorate will be prepared according to TUT's instructions in collaboration with the research group. The successful candidate must either already be or enrol as a doctoral student at TUT.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff the position of a Doctoral Student is placed on the job demands levels 1-4, starting salary in this position is 2,300-2,600 euros/month while Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6, with a starting salary in the range of 3,300 - 3,600 euros/month. In addition, employees receive performance-based salary.

Trial period:

Trial period of six (6) months applies.


The positions are filled from the beginning of May 2018 or as soon as possible. The duration of the contract will be two years with possibility of extension.
