Immersive visual technologies (IVT) have great potential in safety-critical applications (e.g. heavy work machines, emergency response) in which human operators face complex and demanding situations where their decisions can have far-reaching consequences on productivity, environment, and even human lives.
‘Immersive Visual Technologies for Safety-critical Applications’ (ImmerSAFE) is an Innovative Training Network funded by the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions scheme within Horizon 2020 EU program. The aim of ImmerSAFE is to train multi-disciplinary experts, who have an understanding of the core imaging technologies, the requirements set to them by the safety-critical applications and who can account for the human user in the design of such systems.
Now, ImmerSAFE offers positions for early-stage researchers who have the suitable background and motivation to work on highly-innovative projects and be trained in competitive yet collaborative research and study environment. Besides local courses offered by prestigious universities, the training program includes also online seminars, workshops, and training schools. Mobility between network partners is supported by research visits and secondments. In this way, the employed researchers will be integrated in the network with the aim to help them to interact with their fellows and within different research, development and innovation environments.
This highly innovative training will help the researchers to build a solid fundamental of the area and will put them in an extremely good position in their future career endeavours in a rapidly growing sector.
The network offers fifteen well-funded three-year research positions for doctoral students in five countries (Finland, Croatia, Italy, Norway, and Sweden) that open the perspectives for an excellent training and a free creative work in prestigious institutions and companies in the field. ImmerSAFE is the only EU MSCA-ITN of this type regarding the use of immersive visual technologies in safety-critical applications.
Our aim is to recruit excellent researchers with the ambition to become the next research leaders and innovators in the area of immersive imaging, embedded systems, industrial design and organizational psychology. Two positions available (36 months each) at Tampere University of Technology in the following research projects:
Position 1 (ESR 2)
Research project: Accommodation and convergence cues on transparent display media
Objectives: Develop a transparent display that can be mounted on a windshield of a work machine. In comparison to state-of-the-art head-up displays, the aim is to make a scalable, low complexity display having correct depth cues thus minimising the need for eye focal re-accommodation and convergence. Develop necessary algorithms for optimising content to be shown on the designed display. Evaluate the performance of the display in two use cases under consideration, namely, heavy machines and control centres.
Expected outcomes: A prototype of the targeted see-through display having correct depth cues and associated algorithms for maximising the visual quality of the content shown on the display.
Planned secondments: Secondments at partners from ImmerSAFE network are encouraged and have been planned for periods for up to nine months. These research visits shall allow the researcher to gather hand-on experience with display materials, integration of the proposed solution and user experience evaluation of the developed display.
Position 2 (ESR14)
Research project: Compression methods for geometry-enhanced light field images under safety-critical conditions
Objectives: Investigate and propose new dedicated compression methods for geometry-enhanced light field images in safety-critical conditions. This includes an analysis of the multimodal sensor data for interpreting the scene with respect to mission-critical and safety-critical elements (e.g., the pose of objects to be grasped, manipulated, or inspected). The relevant 3D scene geometry defined by the elements of interest is compressed in a lossless mode. The compression of light field image conditional on the 3D geometry is then designed to achieve very high efficiency
Expected Results: Novel dedicated compression techniques for geometry-enhanced light field images, where the defined region-of-interest and detected objects of interest are encoded in a lossless way, allowing the full available precision for decisions with respect to critical elements, when evaluating the decoded data.
Planned Secondments: Secondments to other network partners for up to 9 months have been planned. During secondments, the research should get complementary training on perceptually-driven optimisation of compression methods and for their implementation on embedded systems.
The employed researchers in Positions 1 and 2 will be part of the 3D Media Group lead by Prof. Atanas Gotchev and the employed researcher in Position 3 will be part of the Statistical Inference and Signal Compression Group lead by Prof. Ioan Tabus. Both groups are part of the Laboratory of Signal Processing and the employed researchers will work closely with experts in the area of multi-dimensional signal processing. The researchers will have access to the Centre for Immersive Visual Technologies, which provides research facilities in the sectors of visual scene sensing, advanced displays, and user experience. Therefore, capability in working in multi-disciplinary and international environment is appreciated.
Signal Processing, Computer engineering, Computational data analysis, Optics, Statistics
Early stage researcher or 0-4 years of (Post graduate) experience. First Stage Researcher (R1)
We are looking for talented, creative and highly motivated researchers. A suitable background for these open positions include signal processing, applied mathematics, computer vision, software engineering and other related areas. Fluent written and spoken English and proficiency in using scientific software packages such as Matlab and C are required.
Candidates applying for the doctoral student position must hold Master’s degree in computer science, electrical or electronic engineering, computing, information technology or applied mathematics, and the recruited candidate is expected to enroll as a doctoral student at TUT.
Applicants shall, at the time of recruitment by the host organization, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree that would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate.
H2020 MSCA Mobility Rule: at the time of recruitment by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization (Finland) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
The salary will be set in accordance with MSCA ESR rates.
The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a trial period of four months.
The position will be filled for a fixed term period of three years (36 months). The commencement date will be in April-May 2018 or as mutually agreed upon by both parties.
