Three fixed-term Postdoctoral Researchers at the Centre of Excellence in Body-on-Chip Research (CoEBoC)

The Faculty of Biomedical Science and Engineering at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) was formed in the beginning of 2017 by joining the research groups of TUT experienced in the areas of sensor technology and biomeasurements, biophysics, signal processing, imaging, biomaterials, tissue engineering, single cell biology, computational and systems biology, and computational neuroscience. Currently we have 16 full and tenure professors and 150 other staff. We provide education in bioengineering, electrical engineering and materials science degree programs via Majors and Minors of Biomedical Engineering, Bioimaging, Biomaterials, Biomeasurements, Computational Biology, Health Informatics Intelligent Microsystems, Micro Mechatronics, and Tissue Engineering.

The Faculty belongs to the BioMediTech Institute which is a joint research institute of TUT and University of Tampere. In the BioMediTech Institute, researchers whose interests lie in medical sciences and technologies, biology, and behavioral sciences have grounds for close collaborative multidisciplinary research. BioMediTech offers world-class research environment and support for innovation and commercialization of the research results. This multidisciplinary environment provides a solid foundation for pursuing new discoveries and solutions that promote health and well-being. Professor Minna Kellomäki is the head of the BioMediTech Institute and the Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Science and Engineering at TUT.

The Centres of Excellence (CoEs) are the flagships of Finnish research, operating at the very cutting edge of science in their fields, seeking out new avenues for research, developing creative research environments and training new talented researchers. The Centre of Excellence in Body-on Chip Research is based on strong, existing collaboration between the participating research groups and it combines know-how in biological and engineering sciences to develop a new “body-on-chip” platform.

The platform will consist of several cultured tissue blocks connected with cultured vasculature and nervous systems integrated with engineered environment with innovative materials, microfluidic sensing and imaging. To achieve this goal, the researchers will combine multidisciplinary expertise on human stem cells, biomaterials, sensors, microfluidics, biomodelling and bioimaging.

The CoE will produce comprehensive knowledge, for example, on understanding tissue interactions, constructing complex in vitro tissue co-cultures and controlling their functionalities. The resulting expertise and technologies will improve, for instance, the development of new personalised treatments and drugs.The CoEBoC is a joint centre established by six research groups at the University of Tampere (UTA) and the Tampere University of Technology (TUT): Minna Kellomäki (TUT, consortium leader), Katriina Aalto-Setälä (UTA), Jari Hyttinen (TUT), Pasi Kallio (TUT), Susanna Miettinen (UTA) and Susanna Narkilahti (UTA).

Job description:

The Centre of Excellence in Body-on-Chip Research (CoEBoC) at the Faculty of Biomedical Science and Engineering at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) invites applications for three fixed-term (two years) Postdoctoral Researcher positions for the development of microfluidics in Organ- and Body-on-Chip systems, for development of 3D bioimaging and for either development of 3D-scaffolds (polymer or polymer-based composite) or surface functionalization.

Requirements:

Postdoctoral Researcher for the development of microfluidics in Organ- and Body-on-Chip systems. For position, you must have a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the research programme, a high-level scientific expertise in a theme appropriate to the CoEBoC programme and an excellent international publication record in the field of microfluidics, Bio-MEMS, biosensing, microfabrication, or from a closely related field.

Postdoctoral Researcher for development of 3D bioimaging. For position, you must have a doctoral degree and an excellent international publication record in a field relevant to bioimaging and a scientific expertise in a theme appropriate to the CoEBoC programme. Advantage is given to applicants with expertise on X-ray micro CT tomography, or optical 3D bioimaging methods, and physics or biochemistry of the bioimaging.

Postdoctoral Researcher for either development of 3D-scaffolds (polymer or polymer-based composite) or surface functionalization. In the project, the aim is to develop functionalized scaffolds, topografies and structures for body-on-chip research. For position, you must have a PhD degree in a field relevant to the research programme. Studies in fields such as polymer chemistry, biomaterials, material science and/or tissue engineering, are requested from the applicant.

Salary:

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6. In addition, employees receive performance based salary.

Trial period:

Trial period of four (4) months applies.

Other:

The position will be filled for a fixed term period two years (It is possible that the job continues after that). The commencement date will be 3 April, 2018 or as mutually agreed.
